Part of Aruba’s romance is its intimate size. Its total area is only 70 sq mi (184 sq km), and most of that is unused by the local tourist population who opt more for its white sand beaches than its desert interior. Trade winds caress the land, evidenced by the divi-divi trees that are in a permanent wind swept position. Aruba is part of the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao) within the Caribbean. A rich history has shaped its culture, which mixes traditional Caquetios indigenous people with Spanish and Dutch influences culminating in a happy and hospitable people. Aruba remains under the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but has enjoyed autonomy since 1986.
When visiting Aruba, expect a consistent temperature of 81 F (27 C), while staying in Oranjestad (the capital) or venturing farther afield. While visitors may be tempted to spend most of the time at their resort’scasinos, private beaches and restaurants, they would be doing a disservice to miss other area attractions—from sailing and scuba diving, to visiting the Donkey Sanctuary and Arikok National Park. And as the sun sets on a perfect day, the night comes alive in nightclubs and bars as Latin beats infuse the air with a sensual rhythm.
